Local visibility starter guide

Choose a useful baseline

Start with one location and one service a real customer would search for. Keep a note of the exact phrase, map center, spacing, grid size and date. A narrow service term and a broad category answer different questions; do not treat them as interchangeable measurements.

In Local Maps Rank, open the location and inspect its search tabs. Use the same settings for the next comparison. For an agency, put related locations into a group so you can find them together, but compare each location against its own earlier scan. Different cities and businesses do not share an identical competitive environment.

Practice: Write down your location, service phrase and the business question this scan should answer.

Read the whole map

Each grid point represents a separate search location. Read the point labels and search depth alongside the colors. A strong result near the business does not establish that the same business ranks well everywhere in the service area. An unranked observation means the business was not found within that search depth; it is not a precise numeric rank.

Use top-three coverage and the distribution across the grid to describe the result. Check whether the weak area is a cluster or scattered points. Record what you can see before deciding why it happened. A single map does not identify the cause of a ranking change, and map positions are not a count of phone calls, sales or revenue.

Practice: Describe one strong area and one weak area without guessing the cause.

Pick a small, truthful fix list

Google describes local results in terms of relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change the searcher’s location by editing a profile. Focus on accurate business information, appropriate categories, current hours and helpful service information. Check recommendations against the actual business before editing anything.

Choose a small number of tasks you can verify. Record the change, its owner and its date. Do not add a service, address or qualification that the business does not genuinely have. A task list is a plan, not a promise of a particular ranking. Keep sensitive customer information out of public profile content.

Practice: Choose three accurate, verifiable improvements and assign a date to each.

Google’s official guidance

Invite honest feedback

Use the location’s review-link card to help real customers find the correct business profile. Ask for honest feedback without offering a reward or screening customers by the rating you expect. Google prohibits incentives for posting, changing or removing reviews. Never write a review on a customer’s behalf or manufacture customer evidence.

Choose a communication channel you are entitled to use and respect the customer’s preferences. The review link itself does not send a campaign. Before exporting contacts or activating another provider, check what that provider will send and whether an existing automation will run. Reply to criticism professionally without revealing private appointment or customer details.

Practice: Check that your review link opens the correct business, then draft one neutral request.

Google’s official guidance

Keep the comparison fair

Compare the same keyword, grid center, spacing and search depth over time. If a setting changes, label the break in the series. Separate Google Maps observations from organic website positions. On paid plans, Local Maps Rank checks the regular Google results for each tracked search once a week (top 20) for locations that have their own website, and stores them in organic history with the source “Google organic (automatic, top 20)”. You can also add your own observations and source.

Use more than one observation when describing a trend. Write down notable business or website changes, but do not assume that a change caused the next ranking movement. Missing data should stay missing rather than becoming zero or a fabricated rank. If a provider or report failed, resolve that failure before treating the week as a meaningful decline.

Practice: Compare two matching scans and state what changed, what stayed stable and what is uncertain.

Send a useful explanation

A useful client report states the location, keyword, date range and measurement settings, then explains the result in plain language. Separate observed positions, completed work and proposed next actions. Label internal tests as internal tests. Never substitute a demonstration or recorded fixture for a real client result.

Before sharing a report, confirm that the location and recipient are correct and that any agency branding belongs to your account. Review the PDF and map on a small screen as well as a desktop. Explain that a search-position report measures visibility; revenue and lead attribution require their own evidence. Finish with the next concrete action instead of a guaranteed outcome.

Practice: Write a three-sentence report: observed result, limitation, next action.
